“Yo soy el Tango” by Aníbal Troilo y su Orquesta Típica with Francisco Fiorentino in vocals, 1941.

Music: Domingo Federico. Lyrics: Homero Expósito.

“I am
the milongón tango
born in the suburbs
malevos and murky.

Today,
that I am in the dance hall,
they know me tamed,
sweet and tired.
What to believe for,
why lie
that I am changed,
if I am the same as yesterday.

Listen to my song.

Don’t you see that I am gotán?

I break in my song
like a steel dagger
to sing a betrayal.
I like to compadrear,
I’m brave for dancing
listen to my song:

I am the old tango
born in the suburbs.”

Juan Carlos Cobián

Pianist, leader, composer and lyricist (31 May 1896 – 10 December 1953)

In 1916, he joined a trio with Eduardo Arolas on bandoneon and Tito Roccatagliatta on violin, at the stage of the cabaret Montmartre, shared with Pepita Avellaneda, the first woman who sang publicly tangos.

That same year he had to comply with the military service, but he postponed it on his own decision and had to inevitably serve three years later, generally under arrest.

What gave him good reasons to compose then his later famous “A pan y agua”.

After over a year serving in the Infantry Regiment 2, he got the discharge he was longing for and went on with his normal life, that is to say, the one he led protected by night shadows, among good tangos, good whisky and beautiful girls.

Later withdrew from musical activity voluntarily, confining himself in his humble little apartment placed on Montevideo street.

“Tal vez será su voz” by Aníbal Troilo y su Orquesta Típica with Alberto Marino in vocals, 1943.

Alberto Marino, Argentine Tango singer.

Alberto Marino

Singer and composer (April 26,1923 – June 21, 1989)

His tenor register and the influence of the Italian singing school, which although several tango vocalists had it, in the case of the “Tano (Italian)” Marino, it generated the feeling that he had more than enough voice for the challenge presented by the lyrics.

He could go from a powerful high to a deep bass with the ease of the chosen ones, he had an unmistakable vibrato but which he did not abuse.

The truth is that the great conductor Alfredo Gobbi baptized him “The golden voice of tango.”

He made his debut as an orchestral singer in 1939.

The bandoneon player Aníbal Troilo listens to him sing and makes him an offer to join his group. He accepts the offer of Troilo with whom he performed from 1943 to 1947.

For many it was the singer’s best time, his versions of the tangos “Tres amigos“, “Fuimos” and “Tal vez será su voz” are true jewels, among many others, of his contribution to the history of Tango.

Alberto Marino left us with the indelible memory of the brilliance and sonority of his golden voice.

“El lengue” by Edgardo Donato y su Orquesta Típica, 1940.

“El lengue” by Edgardo Donato y su Orquesta Típica, 1940.

Edgardo Donato, Argentine Tango musician, leader and composer, with his orchestra.

Edgardo Donato

Violinist, leader and composer (April 14, 1897 – February 15, 1963)

The orchestra of Edgardo Donato had a phrasing wrapped up in wide dynamics, where the showcasing of bandoneons and Donato’s frequent interventions as soloist was evidenced.

The leader was a true example of the style developed by El Pibe Ernesto, that is to say by Ernesto Ponzio.

This description is completed with the musical gymnastics that Donato performed, together with his famous pizzicati.

His was a dance orchestra, according to his merry absent-minded temper.

He was composer of over two hundred numbers, some of them true classics of the tango repertory.
